Special Judiciary Medical Officer of Peradeniya University Amal Wedisinghe who performed the postmortem on university student D.K. Nishantha confirmed today that the victim committed suicide by hanging himself. D.K. Nishantha abandoned university education after a ragging incident in 2011, and mystery surrounded yesterday as to whether he was murdered or if he committed suicide. However Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the mystery was cleared after Special Judiciary Medical Officer of Peradeniya University Amal Wedisinghe confirmed that the death of D.K. Nishantha was a suicide. The deceased was a resident of Aacharigama in Angunakola Pelassa, and he was also the main witness to a University ragging case heard in Kandy Magistrate Court. Peradeniya University Vice Chancellor Professor Athula Senarathna told our news team that a special committee was appointed to probe the nature of the tragedy although it was proved a suicide. The remains of D.K. Nishantha were scheduled to be taken to his home at Thihagoda in Matara today and the funeral will be held tomorrow.
